Our earth is full of life, forests, 0:04 rivers, animals, and people. But today, 0:08 our climate is changing. Climate change 0:11 is one of the biggest challenges facing 0:13 us today. What is climate change? 0:17 Climate change is a long-term shift in 0:19 the Earth's weather patterns. Normally, 0:22 the Earth's climate changes slowly over 0:24 time due to natural factors. But today, 0:27 human activities such as burning fossil 0:30 fuels, deforestation, and livestock 0:33 production are speeding up the process 0:35 and making the planet warm faster. What 0:39 causes climate change? Uncontrolled 0:42 burning of coal, oil, and gas for 0:45 electricity and transport has remarkably 0:48 increased the amount of greenhouse gases 0:50 in the air. These gases trap heat in the 0:53 air like a big warm blanket around the 0:56 earth. Cutting down forests makes it 0:59 worse because trees help take in carbon 1:02 dioxide which is a major greenhouse gas. 1:05 What happens when the earth gets hotter? 1:08 The rising global temperatures result in 1:11 melting glaciers, increase in sea 1:13 levels, and extreme weather events such 1:16 as storms and heat waves. This affects 1:19 millions of people, wildlife, and 1:21 ecosystems. 1:23 What are the solutions? 1:25 All is not gloom and doom, though. We 1:28 can slow down climate change by reducing 1:31 carbon emissions, using renewable 1:33 energy, protecting forests, and adopting 1:36 sustainable practices. 1:39 All over Bhutan and the world, schools 1:41 are teaching students like you how to 1:44 take care of our planet. Students are 1:47 planting trees, recycling, and learning 1:50 how to live more sustainably. 1:53 Even small actions in your school like 1:55 turning off lights or using less plastic 1:58 can make a big difference. 2:01 You can also choose environment related 2:03 career and contribute to long-term 2:05 solutions through research or policy 2:08 advocacy. 2:10 How is Bhan taking action? 2:13 Bhutan's vast forests absorb more carbon 2:16 dioxide than the country emits from all 2:19 its activities. This is called being 2:22 carbon negative. This means Bhutan's 2:25 forest and environment help clean the 2:28 air for the whole planet. 2:30 The constitution of Bhutan even says 2:33 that 60% of the country must stay 2:36 covered by forest for all times to come. 2:40 That's amazing, right? 2:42 Bhutan also uses clean energy from 2:44 rivers called hydropower instead of 2:47 polluting fossil fuels. Communities grow 2:50 food in eco-friendly ways, plant trees, 2:54 and protect animals. 2:56 What can you do? Even as a student, you 3:00 can be a climate hero. Use less 3:03 electricity. Turn off lights when not 3:06 needed. Walk or bike instead of taking a 3:10 car. Reuse and recycle. 3:14 Climate change is real, but so is the 3:16 power of action. Together, we can 3:19 protect our planet for future 3:21 generations.*** From UNESCO New Delhi 2 weeks ago
