Lagos floods- chaos on roads- disruptions "almost like a norm" News Central TV Africa video n transcript at Heating Planet blog

"Flood waters here were so high it went right into a plaza. This is a road that motorists make use of as an alternative to connect to that destination. But as you can see this road all the way down is flooded. Now it seems like this water never dries up. This water is always here and we try to get some more information concerning why." In the aftermath from heavy rain in Nigeria Sep 24 ANOTHER sudden hydro meteorological event in 2025 - WATCH News Central TV report on Nigerian flood transcript below

At this point, we track back a bit to 0:03 retouch on the flood stories where we 0:05 understand that heavy rains and flooding 0:08 have actually disrupted human and 0:10 vehicular movements in some major parts 0:12 of Lagos states. We at this point will 0:15 be talking to our correspondents who 0:18 have been monitoring the situation, 0:19 Victor Badik and Israel Ferobo. Uh okay. 0:23 So as we understand right now, Israel is 0:25 on standby to give us an update as 0:28 regards the flood and how people are 0:30 coping with the situation. Uh Israel, 0:34 thank you so much for joining us. Now 0:35 let's have an understanding of what the 0:38 aftermath has been with the heavy rains 0:41 and the flooded areas. 0:47 you uh at this point in time we we just 0:51 birthed at um Ikate Ilushi. This is 0:55 Kella Road here in Ikate Elushi where 0:59 you can see the aftermath of um the 1:01 rains from yesterday. Uh we understand 1:04 that if we had been here yesterday where 1:07 I'm standing, you would not be able to 1:09 stand here. And um the flood waters here 1:13 were so high it went right into a plaza 1:16 that is just to my left here the right 1:18 on your screen. The waters you know the 1:20 flood waters here the moves were really 1:23 really really high. Uh vehicles that you 1:26 see right now they found it really 1:27 difficult you know to navigate this 1:29 particular road. This Kusella road here 1:32 in Nicate Leushit is a very very 1:34 important uh road here in Leki. Uh cuz 1:36 uh when the major road we understand is 1:40 uh is is blocked. This is a road that 1:43 motorists make use of as an alternative 1:45 uh to connect to that destination. But 1:48 as you can see this road all the way 1:51 down is flooded. Now one information 1:53 that we also gathered since we got on 1:55 the ground is the fact that it seems 1:57 like this water never dries up. this 2:00 water is always here and uh we try to 2:03 get some more information concerning why 2:05 the situation is is like this and 2:07 according to some of the the respondent 2:09 that we spoke to according to them they 2:11 claim that the drainage in this area are 2:14 really small and not uh they're kind of 2:17 filled up as well and that's one of the 2:20 major problems why this particular road 2:22 is always always flooded this is the 2:25 situation underground here in Kate Lego 2:28 Cruella Uh to be uh precise, the flood 2:31 waters are still here and we understand 2:34 it never dries up. When the rains come 2:37 like they have been coming in in the 2:38 last couple of days, the water goes so 2:41 high where I'm standing, you will not be 2:43 able to stand here. Leo 2:46 and businesses reading from the impact 2:49 of this rain. Are they still able to go 2:52 about their businesses? Are shops still 2:55 able to open despite the situation? 3:01 Well, Leon, speaking about businesses in 3:03 the area, well, apparently they are 3:05 undeterred with what is happening here. 3:08 they have gone ahead with their 3:09 businesses. Uh because it's almost like 3:12 a norm for them uh to experience things 3:14 like this. Uh the businesses in this 3:16 area, they're functional, shops are 3:19 opened and work is going on as per 3:22 usual. It's almost as if nothing has 3:25 happened because this according to them 3:27 is more like a daily occurrence. Let's 3:29 quickly bring in someone here now who uh 3:32 experiences this every single day and 3:34 let's talk to him. and let him give us 3:36 his own uh firsthand information of why 3:39 uh this this has been the situation for 3:43 some days now. Yeah. Thank you so much 3:44 for coming to us. This is New Central 3:47 Television. Uh my name is Israel. What's 3:49 your name? 3:49 Tundday. 3:50 Tundday. 3:51 Yes. 3:51 What road is this and what exactly uh is 3:54 happening here? Talk to us. Uh 3:56 this is Conella Road in Kate Leushi. Um 4:01 I've been here for I have a shop here. 4:03 I've been here for about two and a half 4:05 years now or say 3 years and it has been 4:10 like this 4:12 once there's rain it is messed up. This 4:15 is even kind as it is. Yesterday it was 4:19 a problem. I have I have an SUV a 4:22 pajgerro. It is high has high clearance 4:26 and uh I have been in floods. It is on 4:29 this street for the first time water 4:31 will enter my vehicle. That is how bad 4:35 this road is. It's aundant 4:47 right there. But um this is one story 4:49 that will continue to track on even as 4:51 we connect with our correspondents 4:53 across the country to um understand how 4:56 people are rolling over the flood 4:59 situations not only in their um homes 5:02 but of course uh um in their business 5:04 areas and how they're hoping to cope 5:06 most especially what governments can do 5:08 uh to put an end to this. Okay. So um 5:11 Israel I'm told that you are back 5:13 online. Uh if you can continue with the 5:16 conversation with that person uh let us 5:19 have an understanding of um um how this 5:22 is affecting him and of course his 5:24 business. 5:27 Look we're back and I will just go ahead 5:29 now uh keep on uh speaking to the 5:32 gentleman here who was telling us about 5:34 how the situation here has been. It it's 5:38 I'm sure the authorities are aware of 5:40 this because uh it's been a perennial I 5:44 mean issue the flooding here. Um what 5:49 what I see 5:51 a couple of things. First of all the 5:54 discharge point for the road is blocked. 5:58 Houses have been built and they've 6:01 covered those discharge points. the 6:04 road. Second thing, the road is lower 6:07 than the drainage. 6:10 Third, the drainages are not deep 6:12 enough. 6:14 That is the challenge. The authorities 6:16 know about it. It is not the first time. 6:18 You have all kinds of people living 6:19 here. So, they are aware. I I would also 6:22 appeal to the oba. I mean, the oba is 6:27 influential enough is the of this area. 6:31 He can reach out to the government as 6:32 well because he affects him. People 6:34 coming from here to come to his palace. 6:37 He can reach out help us appeal to the 6:39 government and the government also 6:40 should do something about it. It is 6:42 horrible. Vehicles, people fall down, 6:46 people get injured, vehicles get 6:48 spoiled. They should do something about 6:50 it. It's been on for years. 6:54 I don't know why. 6:56 Has there been any sort of um response 6:58 from the government here before the 7:00 local government chairman as well? 7:01 I have not seen anybody some I think 7:04 last year they tried to dig out debt 7:08 from the drainages. That is not the 7:10 solution to the problem. Digging out 7:12 debt from the look at 7:14 what do you think is what do you think 7:15 is it will be a lasting solution to this 7:16 problem? I've just told you first of all 7:20 houses that have been built on top of 7:22 the canals the dist points those houses 7:26 state government housing authority or 7:29 whatever I don't know what they are 7:31 doing they give out permits for people 7:34 to build houses do you understand on 7:37 places that they supposed to build 7:38 houses on 7:41 but I mean how many houses do you want 7:43 to break down now second thing to do is 7:46 the drainage on the road. Fix it. 7:49 Thank you very much. Thank you. Okay, so 7:52 Leon, there you go. This is uh the 7:54 situation here. You've heard from 7:56 someone who has lived there for some 7:58 time now and who understands the 7:59 situation. Leon, the story is simple and 8:03 the solution is clear. They need answers 8:05 and they need it right now. Even the 8:08 children here, you can see children 8:09 walking on the water. you know that 8:11 they're trying to navigate and they are 8:13 right in the water right now trying to 8:17 head back home from school. It is the 8:19 situation here in Kate Legos and I mean 8:22 this shouldn't be happening. This should 8:24 not be happening. Kids walking on water, 8:27 you know, flooded streets here in here 8:28 in in a Kate Legos. It should not be 8:31 happening. We're only hoping that the 8:33 government will listen this time around. 8:34 Nico, 8:35 well, it's quite interesting in 8:37 cosmopolitan area that we have 8:38 situations like this brewing up. We hope 8:40 that government will able to take a quue 8:42 uh from this and prevent uh a further 8:45 escalation of flooding in our areas. 8:49 Thank you so much Israel for bringing 8:51 the details to us. 8:56 [Music]
