TRANSCRIPT: Florida has more uh freshwater springs 0:20 than anywhere else in the world. um the 0:22 wildlife and the ecology like all of it. 0:26 It's so um it's full of life. 0:50 drive here and I forget my 0:55 springs are so important one because 0:57 whenever I go to a spring it's where you 0:59 see people recreate. I mean this is this 1:01 is our beaches when you're in the middle 1:03 of the state. Um it's such a beautiful 1:05 place. I I love going to springs and you 1:07 often see young people, old people, 1:09 families. Um, but then this is also our 1:12 drinking water supply, right? So, every 1:14 spring is coming out of the Florida 1:16 aquifer. The Florida aquifer provides 1:18 the drinking water. I mean, if you live 1:20 Orlando north and you are pulling water 1:23 out of the Florida aquifer, 1:31 [Music] 2:02 We just have too much pollution going 2:05 into the ground and too much water 2:07 coming out of the And when you get that 2:09 combination, you end up with springs 2:11 that are no longer blue and vibrant and 2:13 full of life. They're green. They're 2:15 full of algae. And you just don't see 2:17 the kind of ecosystems that had 2:19 developed for, you know, hundreds and 2:20 hundreds of years here. 2:39 anywhere where the state can screw up a 2:42 spring, it's in bad shape. And now, even 2:45 though we have the legislation that 2:47 requires it, even though we have 2:49 politicians that like to talk a good 2:50 game, you know, the numbers are the 2:52 numbers. And the numbers say that things 2:54 are just getting worse and worse. 3:10 used sign in the middle of the river 3:12 that no motorboats pass that sign. 3:15 Okay. 3:21 At some point, there's going to have to 3:22 be a wakeup call. You cannot keep doing 3:25 what you're doing. You cannot keep 3:27 poking holes in the ground just to keep 3:29 cheap water coming up out to give your 3:32 permits for houses and condos and mobile 3:34 home parks and golf courses. It's is 3:37 it's not sustainable. 4:04 I really think this is a a lack of 4:06 political will to fund the problem, to 4:08 regulate, to help farmers, to build more 4:10 wastewater treatment plants. The answers 4:12 are relatively simple. This is not 4:14 climate change. This is a pretty 4:17 straightforward issue. We just don't 4:18 have the political will to tell people 4:20 no and then to get on the pathway to 4:22 restoration.

"Springs that are no longer blue and vibrant and full of life. They're green, full of algae." Heating planet threatens Florida drinking water supply
Florida's once-pristine springs threatened by pollution, development and climate change/ global warming. "United Nations • Climate change refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns. Human activities have been the main driver of climate change, primarily due to the burning of fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas." Video and transcript. the Heating Planet at CofA Blog:
