For the first time since it happened, I don't mind that I became poor in
1996. Then after a ten year lawsuit against the Chicago archdiocese as one of thousands
of pedophile priest victims, my settlement check was twelve thousand dollars. when
people I wrote about got six figures, most of them.
So past twenty years I've been navigating the poverty structures of California,
luckily I got old enough to get Social Security. I don't just live from check
to check but now, too crippled to continue even parttime work, that tiny check
is all I've got.
If I'd gotten more from my lawsuit, I'd have bought stocks.

So for the first time in my life, I don't mind being poor. I've gotten good at it after thirty years.
Oh what happened in 1996, there ain't no FDIC protection against a red
headed woman. One moved in with my parents that year and a few months later. Dad
was dead and the money was gone.
We all gotta learn to roll with the punches.
