Iceland shattered temperature records on Christmas Eve when the small eastern town of Seyðisfjörður reached a stunning 19.8 degrees Celsius, marking the hottest Christmas in the country's history. The unprecedented warmth came as tropical air masses combined with a strong high-pressure system over the island nation. Average December temperatures in Iceland typically hover between minus one and four degrees Celsius, making this reading extraordinarily unusual. Bakkagerði also recorded 19.7 degrees on the same day, with multiple locations experiencing near-record warmth. Meteorologists attribute the extreme temperatures to global heating caused by fossil fuel combustion and greenhouse gas emissions. Iceland has experienced dramatic climate changes throughout 2024, including record-breaking May heatwaves where 94% of weather stations recorded their highest temperatures ever.
The country also witnessed mosquitoes for the first time as warming makes it more hospitable for insects. The Arctic region is warming at four times the global average rate, with Iceland's glaciers collapsing and southern fish species appearing in local waters.
SCREEN GRAB:
Iceland recorded its hottest Christmas Eve ever, reaching 19.8° c [67.64 F] in the Eastern region. Average temperatures in Iceland range from 1 to 4° C. The East also recorded 19.7° on the same day. The previous record was set in December 2019 when the temperature reached 19.7°
