USA is now Rwanda

For days I've thought about the interviews I worked on fall 2018, survivors of the Rwanda genocide describing their frightening experience. Lately I keep remembering what several discussed, that in months leading up to the attacks they watched their neighbors acquire weapons specifically to kill them. One girl described her neighbor sitting right where she could see him from her window, sharpening a machete. When she walked outside, the neighbor said to her outright that he was getting the weapon ready for when he killed her. In Rwanda in 1994, one tribe picked up weapons and slaughtered members of the other tribe, people who they went to church with and their kids went to school with. The one tribe was convinced to kill their neighbor tribe by messages coming over a radio station for months. One year later in 1995 Fox News made its first appearance in USA and this weird brainwashing began that has created a new tribalism here. Lately I've been alarmed at how easy it's been for the Fox tentacles to get a large number of Americans to believe that a killer virus is a hoax. That same network of tentacles is behind the extreme arming of Americans. Right now there are more guns in neighborhoods in this country than anyone ever imagined ten years ago. Sometimes the way Boogaloo Bois and others display their assault rifles in public places, I think of those neighbors in Rwanda sharpening machetes in 1994 and wonder who orchestrated that genocide. We never really found out. Maybe it was a trial run, for what is about to happen in USA. Or for what is happening in USA, as false messages over radio and TV about Covid 19 are helping to get specific parts of the population killed right now.
