Local news reports and videos posted on social media show people being evacuated from a number of different areas. The cause of the fires has not been identified, but strong, hot, and dry southern winds in recent days have seen temperatures soar. Algeria has suffered from drought for the last 6 years. In 2021, multiple wildfires in Algeria's northern Cabillia region blazed for eight days and killed 90 people. This year, the country’s seen more than 800 fires across 32 provinces. More than 40,000 hectares of vegetation has been destroyed.
