The fire quickly escalated, spreading through dry brush and expanding rapidly within the first few hours. Evening footage of the Bryson Fire Oct 17, 2026 as it impacted Encinal Canyon. Bryson broke out Thursday, Oct 15 shortly before 5 PM in Malibu, California. By that evening, the fire was mapped at 146 acres, prompting evacuation orders and warnings for nearby communities.
Bryson ignited during a period of critical fire weather, with a Red Flag Warning in effect across Malibu and surrounding areas. Strong Santa Ana winds, low relative humidity, high temperatures, and extremely dry vegetation created dangerous conditions for firefighters working to contain the blaze. These conditions increased the potential for rapid fire spread, wind-driven flames, and spot fires igniting ahead of the main fire. VIDEO: Malibu Wildfire - The Bryson Fire

Strong, erratic winds also presented additional challenges for ground crews and aerial firefighting operations. Los Angeles County firefighters along with assisting agencies, responded with an aggressive suppression effort, including ground crews, engine companies, hand crews, and air support. Evacuation orders and warnings were issued as the fire threatened surrounding areas. Firefighters worked through the night to establish containment lines, protect structures, and prevent further fire spread.![]() |
