Miami: King Tide pours onto roadways regularly now- CBS Miami report Oct 8 w transcript at Heating Planet blog

Because of the King Tide, water is above ground level pouring onto the roadways in Miami. "If we pan over to the right, you'll notice there is a drain which leads to a pump, but it's a never-ending cycle. Most days this whole street is completely flooded." City crews spent time Wednesday fixing pumps on South Lake Drive. But on the north side, "right now it is peak king tide. So, the water is coming right through the rocks and the sea wall and flooding the street." WATCH: King Tides Continue to Flood Communities for 2nd Day | Quickcast  CBS Miami report Oct 8 transcript below:

ANOTHER sudden hydro meteorological event in 2025

Transcripts here for readers writers and researchers

This is CBS News Miami. 0:12 Good afternoon and thank you for joining 0:14 us. I'm Naja Sherman and welcome to CBS 0:16 News Miami's 4 p.m. Quickcast. King 0:18 tides are at their peak and that has 0:21 many people here in South Florida on 0:23 edge. Some had to deal with flooded 0:25 roads and streets. CBS News Miami's 0:27 Morgan Riner was in Hollywood. She spoke 0:29 to concerned residents. 0:32 Right now, we're standing on North South 0:33 Lake Drive in Hollywood. And you can see 0:36 that because of the King Tide, the water 0:38 is above ground level pouring onto the 0:41 roadway. And if we pan over to the 0:42 right, you'll notice that there is a 0:44 drain which leads to a pump and it's 0:47 pumping the water back out into the 0:49 inter coastal, but it's a never- ending 0:50 cycle going around and around. Stephanie 0:53 Burns loves living on North South Lake 0:56 Drive. 0:56 It's beautiful. I love it. It's It's 0:59 just heavenly. 1:00 Most days, specifically on days when 1:03 there are no king tides, 1:05 this whole street is basically 1:07 completely flooded. 1:10 City crews spent time on Wednesday 1:12 fixing pumps on South Lake Drive. 1:16 But on the north side, right now it is 1:19 peak king tide. So, there are a few 1:21 things I want to show you on North South 1:23 Lake Drive. The first one is this. the 1:26 water is coming right through the rocks 1:29 and the seaw wall and flooding the 1:31 street. So, that area definitely needs 1:33 to be repaired. The second one, you'll 1:35 notice further down there's several 1:37 areas where you're seeing a lot of 1:39 bubbling. Those are at least three I'm 1:42 counting. That means the water is coming 1:44 up from the street itself. It's on days 1:47 like this one. 1:48 Look at this in the streets 1:50 that Zach Katchum loves to come to this 1:53 neighborhood to fish. A lot of times the 1:55 king tide pushes a ton of fish back 1:57 here. And I came out here the other day. 1:59 I was catching fish in the street using 2:00 them for bait. But there's bigger fish, 2:02 not just small fish. This whole entire 2:04 place was completely underwater. 2:06 Everyone's house was just barely above 2:09 sea level. I mean, one extra foot. If 2:12 there was a storm right now while this 2:14 king tide was here, all these houses 2:15 would have been completely flooded. 2:17 It's not just Hollywood feeling the 2:19 impacts of king tides Wednesday. All 2:21 across the coast of Broward and Dade 2:22 counties, people will run into some 2:24 trouble. You're being asked to drive 2:26 slowly, avoid walking through flood 2:28 waters, secure loose items, and keep in 2:31 mind that higher water levels means 2:33 lower clearance under bridges for Boers. 2:37 Now, moving to the end of the street, 2:39 it's almost difficult to tell where the 2:41 road ends and where the inter coastal 2:43 begins. In fact, neighbors out here say 2:45 that they're so frustrated some of them 2:47 are meeting with city officials today to 2:49 discuss their concerns and a potential 2:52 seaw wall plan in Hollywood. Morgan 2:54 Riner, CBS News Miami. 2:58 Always tracking, always alerting. This 3:01 is next weather. 3:02 Tough situation out there. And more king 3:04 tides tonight. 3:04 Another round tonight and then for 3:06 tomorrow. This is going to be the 3:07 problem, Naja, because not only are we 3:09 dealing with the king tides again for 3:10 tomorrow morning, but now we're going to 3:12 introduce some potential heavy rainfall 3:14 on top of that. So, I think despite the 3:16 fact that this morning's high tide was 3:18 the peak for this cycle in October, 3:21 we're still going to have some issues 3:22 throughout the day tomorrow. But, let's 3:23 get through tonight because we still 3:24 have another round of high tides coming 3:26 up. There is the high tide coming up for 3:29 Fort Lauderdale later on at tonight. So, 3:32 after 10:00, you're going to start 3:34 seeing the flooding. Same deal uh for 3:36 Virginia Key as well. And then down into 3:38 the Keys, we still have another cycle. 3:40 By the way, a coastal flood advisory 3:41 extended from the National Weather 3:42 Service through tomorrow evening. And so 3:46 we have more rounds of flooding because 3:48 of the high tides and also because of 3:50 the rain that I'm talking about here, uh 3:52 which we're going to talk uh you know in 3:54 the next couple of days. I think that 3:56 will be the highest totals we're going 3:58 to gather before we get into some drier 4:00 conditions here. So check in on the 4:01 forecast with the radar coming in. You 4:04 can see that flow still moving in. 4:06 Showers left and right here, but they've 4:08 been a little bit better for today. You 4:10 can see some right over the interchange 4:13 there. And then a little further south 4:14 and east uh to include places like 4:18 Hollywood and right into Fort 4:19 Lauderdale. This cell just to the south 4:21 of the airport there. We'll continue to 4:23 see that moving off towards the west. 4:24 But in general, as I've been talking 4:25 about the last couple of days, our 4:27 pattern shifts to a wetter one for 4:29 tomorrow and Friday before we get in on 4:31 this front. And that's going to start 4:33 drying things out as we head into the 4:35 upcoming weekend. Checking in on the 4:36 forecast for your rain tracker here as 4:39 we head through Tuesday morning or I 4:41 should say Thursday morning. There we 4:42 are at 6:00 a.m. Right. Showers, even a 4:44 few rumbles of thunder. We'll continue 4:46 to see that rainfall throughout the day. 4:48 And this is going to lead to the 4:50 potential for even some localized 4:52 flooding. I think that's how heavy and 4:53 steady the rain will be. There's the 4:54 evening commute. That not looking good 4:57 either with more rain on the way. The 4:59 reason all this is concentrating, we 5:00 have a frontal boundary to our north and 5:02 that's going to push dry air south. But 5:04 it won't get here until the weekend. And 5:06 so in the meantime, we're just going to 5:07 pull up this moisture and that in turn 5:09 is going to result in all this heavy 5:11 rainfall that I think will continue 5:13 Thursday night and into Friday once 5:15 again. So that is something that the 5:16 weather prediction center which is why 5:18 they put us at a marginal risk for 5:20 flooding for tomorrow. There's that big 5:22 cool down we've been talking about, but 5:23 this won't come until Saturday night 5:25 into Sunday. I think Saturday still 5:27 hanging on to some showers and there is 5:28 the coolest uh you know setup that we've 5:31 had so far this season. Still tracking 5:32 the tropics still Jerry out there. 5:34 That's the only thing in town really. 5:36 It's a tropical storm eventually 5:37 forecast to become a hurricane as it 5:39 pushes off to the north and west. So you 5:40 see the alerts already for the northern 5:43 Leeward Islands as this then has to be 5:44 watched by Bermuda as it gets closer. 5:47 forecast then for the remainder of the 5:50 week and heading into the upcoming 5:51 weekend. Much nicer Saturday, some 5:53 leftover showers and then drier setting 5:55 into Sunday. This may be the end of our 5:58 wet season. Officially, it starts next 6:00 Wednesday. I don't see any significant 6:02 rain for the next couple of weeks after 6:03 that. So, we may be done with our daily 6:06 storms. Na. 6:08 All right, Ivan, thank you. It happened near Sterling and 6:37 Davey roads. Video from this scene shows 6:40 what looks to be a mangled wheelchair 6:43 and a car with damage to the front of 6:44 it. Investigators say the driver stayed 6:47 at the scene. Now to an update on a 6:50 story that we first brought you 6:51 yesterday. The man suspected of shooting 6:53 a West Palm Beach police officer has 6:55 turned himself in. His name is Emanuel 6:58 McCrae. The officer is also out of the 7:00 hospital. Shooting happened in a 7:02 neighborhood near Palm Beach 7:04 International Airport. It all began when 7:06 officers pulled up to a home after 7:08 reports of a fight. When they got there, 7:11 officers were shot at and fired back. 7:13 And that's when the officer was hit. It 7:15 is still unclear what charges McCrae 7:17 might face. 7:20 A murder trials underway for a Miami 7:22 inmate. She gained nationwide attention 7:25 after getting pregnant while she was 7:26 behind bars. 30-year-old Daisy Link 7:30 faces a seconddegree murder charge. It's 7:32 for the June 2022 murder of her husband. 7:36 Officials say she became pregnant by 7:38 inciminating herself. Witnesses 7:40 testified this afternoon, including a 7:42 detective on the murder case. We're 7:44 going to have much more on this story 7:46 coming up on CBS News Miami at 5. And 7:49 now to the government shutdown. Today, 7:51 it entered its second week with no end 7:54 in sight. Senate lawmakers are holding a 7:57 series of votes today on dueling 7:59 measures, but nothing is expected to 8:01 change. Flight delays are still 8:03 spreading nationwide, and that's because 8:06 of underst staffing. Air traffic 8:08 controllers are being asked to work 8:09 without pay. Concerns are growing among 8:12 hundreds of thousands of furled workers. 8:15 President Trump suggested that some of 8:17 them may not get their legally mandated 8:19 back pay once the shutdown ends. 8:23 Former FBI Director James Comey is 8:25 fighting back. Natalie Brand has the 8:28 report. 8:30 Former FBI Director James Comey stared 8:33 straight ahead as his attorney Pat 8:34 Fitzgerald entered a not-uilty plea on 8:37 his behalf. Comey is charged with one 8:39 count of obstruction of a congressional 8:41 proceeding and one count of making false 8:43 statements related to 5-year-old Senate 8:45 testimony during which he denied 8:46 authorizing leaks to the media. I stand 8:48 by what the testimony you summarized 8:50 that I gave in May of 2017. 8:53 CBS News legal contributor Jessica 8:54 Levenson says the charges could be tough 8:57 for the government to prove. 8:58 The prosecution has to show here that 9:01 James Comey didn't make a mistake, that 9:03 he didn't have a memory issue, that he 9:06 didn't intend to say one thing but 9:08 accidentally said another thing. The bar 9:11 for perjury is high as it should be. 9:14 Comey's attorney says he will file three 9:16 motions, including vindictive and 9:18 unlawful prosecution. 9:20 Essentially, he's going to argue, among 9:22 other things in his first motions, that 9:24 this is a vindictive prosecution. And 9:27 unlike most other cases, he has uh uh 9:31 quite a load of evidence to bring to the 9:33 court. 9:33 I think he's a crooked guy. He's a dirty 9:35 cop. Comey's indictment came days after 9:37 the president posted this on social 9:39 media, putting pressure on Attorney 9:41 General Pam Bondi to go after political 9:43 rivals, including Comey. 9:45 He was indicted 9:47 by one of the most liberal grand juries 9:49 in the country by our US attorney, 9:52 Lindseay Halligan, 9:53 right 9:54 right here in in Virginia. Leading the 9:56 case against Comey, President Trump's 9:58 former personal attorney, Lindseay 9:59 Halligan, who was appointed as the 10:01 interim US attorney for the Eastern 10:03 District of Virginia after her 10:05 predecessor resigned, facing pressure to 10:07 prosecute political rivals. Natalie BR, 10:10 CBS News, Washington. 10:12 When we come back, a troubling survey 10:15 reveals what teenage boys are seeing on 10:17 their social media pages. Why parents 10:20 should be concerned next. And don't 10:23 forget, the Miami Dolphins get back to 10:25 work this Sunday. They host the Los 10:27 Angeles Chargers at Hard Rock Stadium, 10:29 and you can watch it right here on CBS 10:31 Miami. Join us for the Coach Mike 10:33 McDaniel show at 11:00 a.m. followed by 10:35 Dolphins Weekly Live. Kickoff is at 1 10:38 p.m. followed by the fifth quarter 10:40 postgame show on CW Miami 33. 10:45 Welcome back to CBS News Miami's 4M 10:47 Quickcast. We are learning a Republican 10:50 state lawmaker has filed a bill. It 10:53 would require all of Florida's public 10:55 state universities and colleges to 10:57 rename one road on campus after 11:00 assassinated conservative activist 11:02 Charlie Kirk. Here in South Florida, 11:05 that would mean renaming streets at FAU, 11:08 FIU, and Miami date college to Charlie 11:11 James Kirk Drive. If passed, the measure 11:14 threatens to hold back state funds from 11:16 institutions if they do not rename these 11:19 streets. 11:21 In today's health watch, new research 11:23 shows insight on what your teen son is 11:26 really seeing on social media, and the 11:28 results may be concerning. A survey from 11:31 Common Sense Media reveals that boys are 11:34 seeing content that promotes masculinity 11:36 and suggests troubling things about 11:38 girls. 90% of boys see messages about 11:42 body image and that can make boys feel 11:44 like they should change their 11:45 appearance. The survey also shows about 11:47 70% of boys regularly see content 11:49 promoting gender roles in problematic 11:52 ways. That includes posts suggesting 11:54 girls prefer to date a particular kind 11:56 of guy. Research suggests that when 11:59 negative messages about females are 12:01 normalized online, it can cause offline 12:04 violence. And that does it for your CBS 12:06 News Mecast. I'm Na Sherman. Stay tuned 12:09 for more news right here on CBS News 12:11 Miami. And have a great day. 12:14 [Music]
