Coming up next. 0:04 >> Extended coverage of 0:05 flooding tonight after the 0:08 rainiest day in Salt Lake in 0:09 more than 100 years. Thanks for 0:11 joining us. I'm Brian. 0:13 >> And I'm Mika Miyashima high 0:15 water in Tooele County and also 0:16 in Salt Lake City, where homes 0:18 flooded in the Rose Park area. 0:20 Our Kristian Seta is live near 0:22 800 North 900 1900 West with 0:24 our top story. Kristian. 0:27 >> Yeah, Mika and Brian. We're 0:29 out here in Rose Park. Now, 0:30 this road behind me here looks 0:33 a lot like a shallow river. 0:34 After it rained a lot. And 0:35 there's lots of floodwater out 0:37 here tonight. Now, we did speak 0:38 to some residents, and they 0:41 told us this is the worst 0:42 flooding they've seen in recent 0:44 years. It's a rough ride home 0:49 for residents of this Salt Lake 0:51 City neighborhood. Floodwaters 0:52 are blocking driveways, soaking 0:55 basements, and there's no easy 0:58 way around. 0:59 >> Can't believe this still 1:00 coming on. 1:01 >> Gary Edwards had just gotten 1:03 off of work when he found his 1:05 street submerged. 1:06 >> And then I come home and see 1:09 this. So it's all new to me, 1:11 and I could not believe it was 1:13 this deep. 1:13 >> The flooding comes after 1:15 hours of heavy rain 1:17 overwhelming a major flood 1:18 canal known as the City Drain. 1:20 >> Salt Lake County Flood 1:22 Control is putting pumps within 1:24 the City drain, which is an 1:26 open water canal. And that 1:29 should cause the water to 1:31 subside and so that the backup 1:35 no longer happens. 1:35 >> At least five homes in the 1:37 area have reported flooding in 1:39 the basements. Others, like 1:40 Edwards, are hoping the 1:42 sandbags will hold them. 1:44 >> Sandbags weren't there. All 1:47 that water would be that way. 1:47 Right into my garage. I mean, 1:50 when they built these houses, 1:51 they didn't really put drainage 1:53 in mind. So it's rather 1:56 horrible. 1:57 >> Still, after nearly two 1:58 decades in the neighborhood, 2:00 Edwards says he's never seen 2:03 anything quite like this. 2:04 >> There's nothing I can say or 2:06 do. Just smile and let it 2:09 happen. 2:12 >> Now, I did speak with the 2:13 director of Salt Lake County 2:15 Flood Control over the phone 2:16 about 20 minutes ago, and he 2:18 told me that the pumps are not 2:20 meant to run all the time, and 2:23 they're only turned on when it 2:23 needed to manage the water flow. 2:25 Now, he says when they were 2:27 notified about this, they made 2:28 it out here within 20 minutes 2:29 and the pumps are working and 2:31 they'll be out here throughout 2:32 the night waiting for those 2:33 flood waters to go down. 2:35 Reporting live in Salt Lake 2:38 City Kristian KUTV 2 News. 2:41 >> Kristian. Thank you. Wow. We 2:43 really feel for the people who 2:45 are pumping out their homes. 2:46 Still dealing with the damage 2:47 from today. 2:47 >> Yeah, and the most rain in 2:49 Salt Lake City in 124 years, is 2:54 that right? 2:55 >> Yes. Wow. Today has been 2:57 significant. So there's only 2:59 been one other date in the 3:00 history books since 1870. For a 3:04 long time that they've been 3:05 taking records. That supersedes 3:07 today and that top spot, May 3:10 3rd, 1901, where we picked up 3:14 2.64in in Salt Lake City in a 3:15 24 hour period. But today, now 3:18 in second place, the wettest 3:21 day in 124 years after picking 3:24 up 2.43in. Unbelievable. And so 3:27 many of you saw totals that 3:31 were either above what Salt 3:31 Lake City saw or just a little 3:34 bit below. So let's start out 3:36 with Tooele tonight, where 3:37 major flooding has taken place 3:39 there 2.76in. Centerville over 3:42 2.5in. Rose Park, where we saw 3:44 some of that flooding just 3:46 barely in. Christian's story 3:48 2.21. University of Utah over 3:49 two. Close to two in Olympus 3:52 Cove, Riverton 1.87. And the 3:54 list goes on. Just a few more. 3:57 Farmington 1.86, South Jordan 3:59 1.32. About an inch and a 4:01 quarter in Draper, West Jordan 4:02 just under an inch and a 4:04 quarter 1.10. Alpine just over 4:06 an inch in Eden and three 4:08 quarters inches in the Logan 4:10 area. The main core of the 4:12 storm now pulling out of Utah 4:14 and into Wyoming. But we still 4:16 have some showers left over 4:17 tonight. In fact, we expect it 4:19 to keep raining north of Salt 4:21 Lake City. There's even a 4:23 thunderstorm that looks a 4:24 little bit heavy just south of 4:25 Brigham City right now. Here's 4:27 what we're looking at right now. 4:30 Still raining in Ogden. And the 4:31 hour by hour says we're going 4:33 to keep a few showers in Salt 4:35 Lake City through 11:00 tonight. 4:36 And then we'll do it again in 4:38 some locations tomorrow. I'll 4:40 show you exactly where and when 4:43 we'll see the rain coming up in 4:44 just a few minutes. 4:45 >> We said we wanted the rain. 4:47 We need it, but not so much and 4:49 not so fast. And you can have 4:51 the power of live radar and 4:53 forecast updates right in the 4:54 palm of your hand. Download our 4:57 2 News weather app. Always be 4:58 ready wherever you are. 5:00 >> And the place where the rain 5:02 fell. Tooele County. Like Joe 5:04 mentioned, nearly three inches 5:05 there. 5:05 >> Flooding in the city of 5:07 Tooele, Stansbury Park and in 5:09 the county. Flood waters 5:11 bubbled. Cut a trench through 5:15 the dirt. Crept into a half 5:20 dozen basements or more, and 5:23 collected on the street. 5:24 >> They kept pulling car after 5:27 car out of the road that was 5:28 getting stuck in the water. We 5:34 went and grabbed some shovels 5:36 and rakes and started clearing 5:38 out the storm drains. And you 5:40 could see the minute they got 5:41 the stuff out, all the water 5:43 going down. 5:43 >> For some it was a day to 5:45 keep flooding from getting 5:47 worse, to make the best of 5:49 nature's excess. 5:50 >> It is unreal. 5:52 >> And to put a drenching day 5:55 into perspective. 5:56 >> We've never had it come down 5:58 this fast, this much, and 6:01 caused this much flooding. 6:02 >> He has lived east of the 6:04 city of Tooele for seven years. 6:06 A spokesman for the North 6:08 Tooele Fire District thinks 6:09 flooding has been worse, but 6:12 called this a quote all hands 6:13 on deck day. 6:15 >> And also into heavy rain 6:17 damaged train tracks. There was 6:19 so much rain, in fact, that 6:22 water washed out the dirt 6:22 underneath the tracks near 1600 6:25 North and Main Street. Two news 6:27 photographer Randy said

KE: I am pretty sure these sudden cloudbursts are an un-predicted phenomenon of global warming. From what I understand, a lot of the glacier and polar ice that is melting is not going into the sea but instead is evaporating into the sky and joining massive moisture clouds all over Earth, which then dump sudden cloudbursts like this one, any time any place, with no forecast. 2025 has had a lot of these sudden cloudbursts. Learn with me as I do Heating Planet blog in the coming months.
