"It needs to be said. Climate induced El Nino and now Rain Bombs" Gavin Newsom on Jimmy Kimmel Live Oct 28- Clip transcribed w 5 screenshots at Heating Planet Blog

"Now, the atmospheric rivers, the intensity, acuity is everything they predicted it would be. It needs to be said: Climate induced El Nino. [applause] Ocean temperatures- maybe you want to pay attention. 7 to 10 degrees higher than normal. Christmas Eve and Thanksgiving are the next two king tides. So you stack that with the Calvin waves. Now you're talking 8 10 feet and now you add storms." Jimmy: I want to ask you about something that I think is interesting. You're ending your term as governor with this big storm El Nino, which I feel like is something we don't know anything about. We're

starting to see the videos of parking lots full of water. I'm starting to get texts from people in other states going, "Hey, are you guys all right out there?" And I'm like, "Yeah, we're fine here. We're not we're not we're okay."

Gavin N: I don't want to- I don't want to overstate, but I'm not going to understate. I just did two executive orders on this. I was out there at Newport Beach yesterday preparing and we're doing a bunch of sandbags. We're pre-positioning assets. Swiftwater rescue teams. This is actually serious for two reasons. One, you have ocean temperatures- maybe you want to pay attention. 7 to 10 degrees higher than normal.

Jimmy: Oh yeah

Gavin N: You've got these Calvin waves that are anywhere from a foot to two feet higher than normal. And then you've got the king tides that will start to peak around Thanksgiving. Prepare for this. and Christmas Eve. Mark Christmas Eve.

Jimmy: Why are they ruining the holidays?

Gavin N: This is- talk to the planet. Jimmy: And Christmas Eve.

Gavin N: Christmas Eve and Thanksgiving are the next two king tides. So you stack that with the Calvin waves. Now you're talking eight 10 feet and now you add storms. It's winter and so that starts to get very serious and you've already seen the impacts on the coast here in Southern California, saw in Northern California and the floods and the infrastructure.

So it's a real thing. climate- I'll say it.

It needs to be said. Climate induced El Nino. [applause]

and we need to be more serious about what's going on with this planet.

Jimmy: This state I've lived here since 1994. It is like I just remember dressing warm on Halloween. You know, it's really kind of scary. I think the temp, the ocean temperature was like 73° this summer. It was crazy.

Gavin N: So, you're seeing all kinds of species die off because the food chain. I mean, it's what's happening underneath the ocean that we're not seeing.

And then, of course, you're seeing ocean creatures that are making their way up that you haven't seen in your lifetime; we're getting tropical storms down here, hurricanes. So, look, this stuff's real.

And I know people, you know, I know it's not fancy to talk about climate change, but we're the most blessed cursed state in America. And we've been on the front end.

All those fires and droughts, simultaneous floods and droughts, hot is getting a lot hotter, dry is getting drier, these rain bombs now, the atmospheric rivers, and the intensity and acuity is everything they predicted it would be.

RAIN BOMBS

Yes! That's what to call them

And it's here.

What we have though is someone whose head is in the sand, soaked by oil in the name of Donald Trump, who's in complete denial about what's going on.

Jimmy: He's not the only one.

Gavin N: And he's not the only one. And I know it polls number 55, but you know, clean energy is about affordability. Clean energy is about resiliency. Clean energy is not giving a damn about $120 gasoline.

[applause]  And we need to talk about it in those terms.

Jimmy: When you say he's got his head in the sand soaked with oil, is that how you do your hair each day? [laughter]

Gavin N: I walked right into that, didn't you?

Jimmy: Yeah, you did. It's unbelievable.
