Bhutan 2 Himalayan glacier melt Oct 29 sweeps away hot springs- flash flood 10,000 Indian residents moved to safety- Global Weather Network report w screen shots at Heating Planet Blog

A destructive flash flood tore through the remote mountain district of Gasa in northern Bhutan late on the night of October 29, 2026, after a high-altitude glacial lake breached its banks. Triggered by a glacial lake outburst from the high-risk Shintaphu lake, the wall of water swept away parts of the famous Gasa Tshachu hot springs, destroyed crucial roads and bridges, and forced emergency evacuations downstream into India.

The sudden deluge prompted the closure of the historic four-century-old Punakha Dzong, forced a major hydro power project to open its dam gates to let debris pass, and triggered emergency flood alerts across West Bengal and Assam where over ten thousand residents were moved to safety.

In video featured here, see footage of the flood’s aftermath in northern Bhutan, the historic Punakha Dzong, affected remote Himalayan roads, and emergency response operations along the border in India.
