Inundated streets in the Thai capital were transformed into makeshift floating markets on Monday (September 28) as severe monsoon flooding continued to paralyze everyday life across Bangkok. In the hard-hit Bangkapi district, vendors waded through knee-deep waters to sell fish, vegetables, and basic groceries from floating foam boxes and plastic tubs after torrential rainfall swamped local shopping plazas. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration declared the capital a disaster-affected zone following nearly 300 millimeters (12 inches) of rainfall over 48 hours, part of a broader weather crisis that has impacted 41 provinces nationwide, affected over 580,000 households, and claimed at least eight lives.
Local business owners report daily losses exceeding 3,000 baht ($90 USD) as fixed costs persist despite severe foot traffic disruptions. Authorities continue emergency relief and drainage operations while residents brace for further rainfall.
