Dozens injured as Typhoon Ragasa hits Hong Kong- South China Morning Post video n transcript at Heating Planet blog

This is what Hong Kongers woke up to as super typhoon hit the city. Two swept away by waves hospitalized- Very strong winds, very very strong- WATCH Dozens injured as Super Typhoon Ragasa hits Hong Kong  0:21 So, my name is Harvey Kong. I'm with the 0:23 South China Morning Post and currently 0:26 we're here in Hung Fa Chun which is 0:28 traditionally one of the hot spots if 0:31 not black spots for typhoons 0:34 in Hong Kong. So as you can clearly see 0:37 the winds are very strong even though 0:38 the w the rains have dampened a little 0:41 bit. The flooding I think is at least 0:43 beyond the ankles. Uh the wind is strong 0:47 at times, making it hard to stand. But 0:49 this just goes to show how treacherous 0:52 or how dangerous the winds here are in 0:54 Hong Kong. And if you're thinking of 0:55 watching the typhoons out in person, we 0:57 strongly encourage you not to do so 0:59 because it extremely dangerous. On 1:02 Tuesday, there was already an incident 1:03 where a woman and her son were swept 1:06 away and host swept away by waves and 1:08 now hospitalized as a result. So, as you 1:11 can see, the wind and the weather 1:13 conditions are nothing to joke about, 1:18 but some wave chasers were undeterred. 1:23 Despite the heavy rain, some people were 1:26 spotted near the harbor side trying to 1:28 catch a glimpse of the large waves 1:29 brought by Regasa. 1:35 Come on. 1:40 Not not every day you get the chance to 1:42 kind of look at look at a big big like 1:45 super typhoon up close. So 1:48 yeah, uh it's a it's an experience, 1:50 isn't it? Good good story to tell. 2:35 And like Hungin earlier, we're seeing a 2:38 very very strong wind presence from this 2:40 typhoon. You can see that in order to 2:42 stand firmly, you have to lower your 2:44 center of gravity and kind of try to not 2:46 to get your wind in your face. So, the 2:48 wind here is very, very strong. 2:53 Hong Kong's coastal communities saw 2:55 water levels rapidly rise due to the 2:57 typhoon storm surge. Flooding was 2:59 reported in Taipo, 3:02 Chhatin, 3:04 and Tranquo, all located in the new 3:06 territories. 3:17 In Samzang, strong winds rip tiles from 3:20 the exterior wall of a residential 3:22 block, exposing the underlying 3:24 structure. 3:31 Along Hong Kong Island's southern coast, 3:33 the lobby of a luxury hotel in Aberdine 3:35 was flooded as waves broke through the 3:37 glass doors. 3:50 [Music] 3:56 Across Hong Kong, 82 injured people had 3:58 received medical care at public 4:00 hospitals by Wednesday afternoon. 4:02 Authorities also reported a total of 698 4:05 fallen trees, one landslide, and 16 4:08 incidents of flooding. Meanwhile, 869 4:11 people had sought refuge in 50 temporary 4:14 shelters. The Hong Kong Observatory said 4:16 Super Typhoon Regaza was as close as 120 4:20 kilometers south of Hong Kong as it 4:22 passed by the city. Wind speeds reached 4:24 a level comparable to 2017's Typhoon 4:27 Heto, 2023's SA and Wipa this past July. 4:31 The super typhoon's maximum wind speed 4:33 while in the vicinity of Hong Kong was 4:36 weaker than Typhoon Manut in 2018. 4:40 Manut was the most destructive typhoon 4:42 to hit the city since 1983. 4:46
