Maddow: Thanksgiving Day 2022  the leader of one of the world's highest profile car companies made a surprise Thanksgiving Day announcement. He told people who owned his company's cars that as of that day they no longer had to drive their cars. Starting that day Thanksgiving Day the cars would be able to drive themselves. From here on out quote Tesla full self-driving beta is now available to anyone in North America who requests it from their car screen, assuming you have bought this option. Congratulations to Tesla autopilot team on achieving a major Milestone.

So this is two years ago, again, Thanksgiving Day, not really any warning this was coming coming just hey hey if you bought a Tesla when you you had the option to pay a little bit extra so it would be capable of driving itself someday, well that day has come Happy Thanksgiving.

So Tesla, like lots of cars now, they send software updates over the air to their cars so your your car gets its operating system updated while it's parked in your driveway. What the company's CEO was announcing that day in 2022 was hey, while you've been inside enjoying turkey and stuffing and I don't know six to eight glasses of wine with your family, lucky you, your car out there in the driveway has just been upgraded to one that can drive itself.

So if you want feel free to give it a go just click the Switch on the, you know, the the screen on your dashboard and the the car henceforth will drive you wherever you want to go.

It was Thanksgiving Day the company CEO put out that announcement. Within a few hours it had led to some news.

Fox Five San Francisco reporter: Now on the Five, sixteen people including eight kids were part of a multi-car crash on the Bay Bridge causing some major traffic tie-ups. They say it happened so fast a chain reaction crash eastbound on the Bay Bridge and inside the Yerba Buena tunnel.

Driver: I thought I was a goner. At first when it happened I mean you see something like that it's like coming towards at full speed, I thought well this is it.

Maddow: So that was Thanksgiving Day 2022.

It turns out it was a Tesla whose owner says the car was in full self-driving mode and the car just randomly braked super hard in the middle of the tunnel, which is what started that huge pile up of cars in the tunnel, the one that injured all those people.

Until today we only saw the aftermath of the Chain Reaction crash by a video of cars stacked up in the Yerba bua tunnel eastbound on the Bay Bridge and a traffic jam that lasted hours.

But Bay Bridge surveillance video now shows how it started.

A 76-year-old lawyer from San Francisco told the CHP his white Tesla Model S was in full self-driving mode when it suddenly deployed the brakes. A total of eight Vehicles crashed nine people injured including a two-year-old boy.

Just hours before the crash, Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced the launch of the full self-driving beta version which he called a major Milestone.

But there are a growing number of reports of the Tesla technology unexpectedly slamming on the brakes. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration assigned a special crash investigation team to look into what happened. They're already investigating dozens of incidents evolving Advanced Driver assistance systems from Volvos Cadillacs Hyundai Genesis and cruise but mostly Tesla.

The year before that big Thanksgiving Day crash in the Bay Area, a government agency started a program where car companies have to report when crashes happen while a car has been in autopilot or in full stealth driving mode. They have to tell the government when that happens.

So that means crashes like that one that happened in the tunnel in 2022 in the San Francisco Bay Area, also from this this other terrible crash that was right nearby in Contra Costa county in California the following year.

This was a firetruck that got slammed into at speed by a Tesla that was on autopilot. The Tesla driver was killed four firefighters were sent to the hospital.

After collecting all of this data for several years, it led to headlines like this: quote Tesla's autopilot and full self-driving linked to hundreds of crashes and dozens of deaths.

Government report described the data about these hundreds of crashes but it also gave the specific details of some of them including one particularly harrowing one from North Carolina.  

A 10th grader stepped off of a school bus, school bus was doing everything right. It was pulled over it had its lights flashing had all the warning signals that a school bus activates when it's letting off students to let everybody know around there that they need to stop, school bus was doing everything right, the kid was doing everything right but a 2022 model y Tesla on autopilot mode nevertheless whipped around the stopped school bus and slammed into this kid this 10th grader who had to be Medevac’d to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.  …

What's happened between mid October and now since then, you might have seen that Tesla's CEO Elon Musk has basically had himself surgically attached to Donald Trump's body. I mean seriously are they stitched together can either one of them get dressed alone at this point?

And of course Donald Trump won the presidential election last month.

So what happens now to anybody who is unsettled by the idea of a robot controlled car driving itself into a nearby fire engine full of firefighters or a robot controlled car slamming on its breaks without warning in the middle of a crowded tunnel full of cars going fast while people are all driving to go see family on Thanksgiving Day, what happens to anybody who might have those kinds of concerns Reuter's headline quote:

The Trump transition has apparently surveyed the landscape of public policy in the United States of America and has decided, yeah, you know what really needs to go, what needs needs to go as a matter of priority is this thing that we've had for a few years now where car companies have to report it when their car is on autopilot and it crashes into something.

that's the word I was looking for and I heard it on a call in radio show this morning. 

I became a shut-in November 2021 when I returned from the Caldor fire evacuation. I hurt my legs with all the packing up and moving from hotel to hotel they made us do, I was still working in the hotel  rooms, had a rental car loaded with all my equipment, had to load it and unload it every four days. Then on the way driving home this pain started in my legs and I have not been able to walk since, [I was already sick it just got much worse] I have not been off my apartment grounds since. I'm a shut-in. People forget you when you're a shut-in, even your neighbors, no one wants to see sickness. Or maybe it's me, I've never been popular. Anyway. I have not left my grounds now for 3 years plus a month and continuing, in fact in past years, people have become so shitty all over the place, I'm kinda seeing my crippledness as a wonderful excuse to avoid everyone. But I would be happier if someone cared enough to visit, notice that I need help like with the shower curtain, that I'm dangerously isolated, if I weren't so mentally healthy it would be dangerous. Instead I just watch with detached intellectual curiosity as all these “Christians” around me ignore a person in obvious need of help. Most other residents of my low income senior building are MAGA rabid Trump supporters, that's main reason we have not connected. I don't bring up politics, they do. First thing to know about Tulsi Gabbard is that she started off life as an anti-homosexuality activist, which is a thing you can be in your life.

Tulsi Gabbard was homeschooled her whole life except for two years she reportedly spent in the Philippines attending a Hari Krishna School run by Disciples of the self-proclaimed Guru that she and her family follow, a group that has defectors who say it's an abusive authoritarian cult. More on that in a moment.

But while Tulsi Gabbard was being homeschooled in Hawaii her dad was founding and leading a whole Litany of anti-gay organizations in Hawaii. He even had an anti-gay radio show called Let's Talk Straight Hawaii. The whole point of the radio show the whole point of every episode of the radio show was how terrible gay people are. Must have been amazing show.

Her father once flew from Hawaii all the way to North Carolina to lead a protest against there being a gay character on Dawson's Creek. He was very devoted to his cause.

Gabbard is anti gay marriage, pro conversion therapy

As part of her own anti-gay fervor, Tulsi Gabbard campaigned to ban gay people from getting married. She led a protest to ban gay people even from being allowed to have civil unions. She worked for an anti-gay organization that said gay people should be subjected to conversion therapy to cure them, so won't be gay anymore.

Perhaps needless to say but conversion therapy is neither therapy nor does it convert anyone but that's thing number one to know about her.

Thing number two, after years in which the only thing she was known for was her anti-homosexuality activism when Tulsi Gabbard decided to get into politics. More broadly when she decided to run for Congress as a Democrat in blue state Hawaii.

She started apologizing for her anti-gay past saying she had changed and she didn't believe any of those anti-gay things anymore.

Now that she has left Democratic Party politics, Tulsi Gabbard has reverted back to form. She introduced an anti-trans bill just before she left Congress in 2020.  A couple years later she enthusiastically endorsed Ron desantis's Don't Say Gay bill in Florida.

By 2023 she was giving a speech at CPAC about gay people being nefarious child  molesters.

So yeah she's back to her roots. She changed, then she just changed right back, that's thing number two.

Thing number three about that supposed cult thing, Tulsi Gabbard’s family moved to Hawaii in 1983 to join the Disciples of this self-proclaimed Guru in Hawaii. His name is Chris Butler. He had started an offshoot there of the Hari Krishna movement starting in the 1970s. Chris Butler's group made multiple efforts to get their members into politics to get members of the group into elected office.

Most of the time those efforts failed after exposes in the local press that these candidates were all followers of the same mysterious Hari Krishna Guru.

But with Tulsi Gabbard they finally made it.

As the first one of his disciples really hit it big in public Politics, the guru Chris Butler told the New Yorker magazine that it was like a music teacher who quote taught one of his students cello and oh this student of mine is now playing cello in the Philharmonic Orchestra, he said, quote, and it's beautiful.

For her part Tulsi Gabbard says it's not a cult definitely not.

Thing number four, when Tulsi Gabbard ran for the democratic nomination for president of the United States in the 2020 election, she literally moved to the state of New Hampshire ahead of the primary there. She rented a house in New Hampshire and moved in. She nevertheless only got 3% of the vote in New Hampshire. Tulsi Gabbard, perhaps it will not surprise you to hear this, proclaimed the 2020 presidential contest to be rigged, to be rigged against her, because otherwise obviously she'd be winning.

Gabbard's bottom of the barrel presidential campaign did take up a lot of her time though. So much so that while she was campaigning, she missed 85% of the votes that happened in Congress, 85% she so abandoned her congressional seat during that campaign that there were high-profile calls from Democrats in Hawaii that she should just make it official and resign her seat so her constituents could put somebody in there who was actually going to show up and do the job.

Tulsi Gabbard did not resign. She did make it to work for one important vote. She did make it to work for Donald Trump's first impeachment and that was kind of a strange thing for her to go out of her way to appear in Washington for. Because she ended up being the only member of the House who voted on the first Trump impeachment but she refused to vote Yes or no.

She did show up for that vote but she just voted present that's thing number four.

Thing number five it's the Russia thing.

You've probably heard something about this since Donald Trump announced that he wants to make her Director of National Intelligence, you might have seen quotes like this one emerging on Capitol Hill.

Once Trump announced that he was picking her, quote, behind closed doors people think she might be compromised.

After ABC settled for $15 million, Trump expects the U.S. DOJ to file these lawsuits for him, turning U.S. government against its own citizens.

TRANSCRIPT: Quite unexpected news this weekend that ABC news would settle a defamation suit with President-Elect Trump and pay him $15 million had the president-elect licking his chops today at a press conference talking about the prospects he imagines for going after more media outlets.

The especially hairy thing he said today was that actually he shouldn't have to bring suits like this himself.  He expects that the Justice Department, the U.S. Department of Justice, should bring lawsuits like this on his behalf.

But the dynamic that's emerging for the second Trump term is not just that powerful people want to be able to use their own power to harass their perceived critics. it's that the new President-elect, he expects-

He expects that he'll be able to use not just his own power and influence, but he'll be able to use the U.S. government to harass and punish his critics.

And it's not just the Justice Department he plans to use.  Today the outgoing chair of the FCC, the Federal Communications Commission, responded to  Trump's demands that the FCC should strip licenses from news network that made him mad.

The outgoing chair said, quote, the FCC has no business threatening to take away broadcast licenses because the President doesn't like the content or the coverage on a network.

Ahead of the election Trump talked about using the U.S. Military, domestically, to target Americans who oppose him or protest against him.

The so-called enemy from within.

Now he's reportedly planning on creating a new board overseeing promotions and senior officers in the U.S. military, which would allow him to purge military leadership of anybody who is disloyal to him or disagrees with him or who has different politics.

Trump and his allies are also reportedly considering with holding federal money from dtates or cities that don't go along with plans like his mass deportation idea.

It feels like a lot because it is a lot and happening all at once.

How do local governments and news organizations and ordinary citizens think strategically about this when  Trump is threatening and saying he expects to use the most powerful government on earth against its own citizens to attack his critics?

What can your mayor or your governor or your local paper or some voluntary organization you might be part of do to stand up against that in a time like this?

I've had this experience way too often to ignore it. Every Time I try to be part of a Facebook group for South Lake Tahoe, where I'm living, and I post something original, within SECONDS this bullying starts. It’s 3-4 men and an occasional woman, ALWAYS no college or even work to show in their lives ALWAYS as soon as I write something they are in my face over and over and over and over repeating nonsense.  It's caused me to quit every group and most of them like Community are so awful I’d never go back.  Since this bullying happens over and over and it's always the same pattern, I can't help but think someone is doing this to me on purpose.  So okay. Over the weekend I posted something that, while documentably true, makes Tami and Duane Wallace look bad; and here I am under attack again. Hmm.

a Whole Facebook Group shouted at me that millions died from the covid vaccine and nobody died from covid, so now they are against all vaccines, even measles and polio. yesterday. It was "El Dorado County Chat" group but most the profiles were new and had no personal info. Someone is using FB to spread information to different regions that will, in the end, kill people. Literally. I just popped awake realizing no one in that “chat” group I left yesterday on Facebook was likely even a real person. I kept clicking on profiles to see who they were and the profiles were all blank. They all claim to live in this county but their profiles list no places lived or education to show etc. I realized the “local” Facebook Group is mostly bots and fake profiles. And I had to take 7 Valerian to get to sleep last night because those fake people had made me so angry, spreading information that will get people killed literally and ZUCKERBERG lets that happen; but when I call them “dumbasses” I get a F-B monitor threat. Zuck spent Thanksgiving with Trump and gave his “inaugural” a million dollars. I really should not trust anything on Facebook anymore except the friends I've had for years there so I stay for my friends. But we are participating in something very sinister and dangerous. Worst for me, I find the people on Bluesky are as vacuous as Twitter. Vacuous, there's that word again. Often I watch old movies as I find them serene, and I realize, wow, there's no phone except on a table at home, no bells ringing & pop-ups interrupting their concentration. We are killing ourselves. I really should just leave social media. If I weren't a homebound crippled person with no caregiver, I would.  I mistakenly keep trying to make friends locally through FB so I can maybe have a visitor. Instead I get a Whole Facebook Group of People shouting at me that millions died from the covid vaccine and nobody died from covid, yesterday afternoon. People who likely don’t even live here are saying that over and over in El Dorado County Chat and Zuckerberg is letting that happen. Assisted mass homicide.

At age 76 I am figuring out how to embed clips on my blog. Seems it depends on the source. Here The Telegraph / New York Times DealBook video will only let me clip ten seconds at a time. Then it will not embed clips so the clips are on my YouTube channel only aargh:

I am convinced Trump was a trojan horse from the start, a weaponized clown / performer who started his dance in 2015 and it took 9 years but he's gotten an entire force that is hostile to USA installed throughout our government.

My take on drones: there is so much junk out there from humans' debris that from space, Earth is starting to look like it has a ring like Saturn. The trashiest planet around is now experiencing its own trash coming back on us. I think
