Our next story comes from South Asia. Sri Lanka is facing a serious weather emergency. Floods and landslides have caused widespread damage and tragic loss of life. A cyclone named Ditwah swept across Sri Lanka today causing widespread havoc impacting thousands. Officials report that the death toll has climbed to 56 and the country has now deployed the military to tackle the situation.
With more casualties feared as search and rescue efforts continue across the country.
The severe weather began last week, but conditions took a drastic turn for the worse on Thursday when intense rainfall swept through many regions. Homes, farmlands, and major road networks were submerged while unstable slopes gave away triggering multiple landslides,
The central tea growing regions of Badulla and Novara Ellia located about 300 kilometers east of Colombo have been among the hardest hit. More than 25 people were killed there in landslides on Thursday alone.
Authorities also confirmed that at least 21 people remain missing and 14 others have been injured in these mountainous areas. With conditions becoming dangerous, the government has ordered all schools and public offices to close on Friday. Heavy rains have caused many rivers and reservoirs to overflow, making several routes impossible. Rail services were also halted after tracks were blocked by fallen debris or completely flooded.

Over the past 11 days, nearly , people have been affected nationwide. Sri Lankan president has called an emergency meeting as 17 districts now face escalating risks. Sri Lanka's meteorological department had confirmed on Thursday that the low pressure system southeast of the island has strengthened into a depression and is expected to intensify further.
