These days, the possibility of   glacier lake outburst has increased   more than before. Global warming has started   affecting these glaciers of Chamoli.   Experts say that the thick layer of snow  acts as a strong cover over the glacier. This snow cover prevents the sun's radiation from reaching the glacier. But   these days the snow has started melting rapidly due to which this cover is getting destroyed.

This has increased the risk of glacier breaking. Due to melting of glaciers in the Himalayas, new glacier lakes are being formed. These lakes are bound by a wall of snow and   mud. Their   breaking causes floods in the lower areas.  Such lakes have been identified   in Uttarakhand. Five of these are in Chamoli and   in Pithoragarh, which have been kept in the high risk   category.   

The glacier is sliding rapidly and there is no balance between its two   parts, the upper part and the lower   part. This could also be one reason. Another reason could be that   it suddenly encounters such a steep slope that   it is unable to adjust because the snow is hard.   It is not elastic. So, the chances of it breaking also increase  due to its being brittle. 

The third   reason could also be that due to excessive   snowfall, an imbalance   is created and the temperature fluctuation   that is happening in the environment these days, whether it suddenly   gets hot or cold,   also increases the melting rate of the glacier   and due to the melting rate, its speed also increases.   

Four years ago, a massive disaster occurred due to the breaking of the   glacier in Reni of Chamoli. At that time, there was a flood in the Rishi Ganga river and people died.   

There are natural   cracks in the high altitude area of ​​Chamoli, where snow remains buried in millions of cubic meters of rock and a large portion of ice   broke and fell, causing devastation.
