A child’s life was claimed in Veracruz, and a police officer lost in Queretaro. The nation’s civil defense coordinator detailed widespread destruction, citing landslides, bursting riverbanks, and collapsing roadways.
President Claudia Sheinbaum has pledged full government support, directing efforts to aid affected populations, restore vital infrastructure, and bring power back online. The military has been mobilized, deploying over 5,400 troops with essential rescue equipment to aid in relief operations. Displaced residents are finding refuge in designated shelters. This year has seen an exceptionally intense rainy season for Mexico, with the capital, Mexico City, recording a new rainfall record.
Adding to the crisis, Tropical Storm Raymond, currently positioned off the Pacific coast, is bringing further heavy downpours as it tracks northward. Damage has already been reported in Chiapas, Guerrero, Oaxaca, and Michoacan. Forecasters anticipate the storm will make landfall in the southern Baja California peninsula over the weekend.*
