Fifth in a new series "The Malcolm Nance Transcripts" at City of Angels Blog. More to come tomorrow.
Quotes from Nance in this transcript:
This is the national security of the United States at stake here. This is not partisan at all.
WikiLeaks right now- as far as I'm concerned it's a question of whether the Trump administration will go after them for stealing eight thousand seven hundred some U.S. intelligence documents. I doubt it, don’t hold your breath.
Guccifer 2.0 was not just this nebulous hacker entity, he was an operative of Russian intelligence, Russian military intelligence, G R U. In fact, he was probably a team of operatives inside an information warfare management center
TRANSCRIPT:
Joy Reid: This
week California representative Eric Swalwell connected the dots between Donald
Trump, his associates, and Russia with this handy dandy chart illustrating some
of the key players and how they're linked, all together. Now if all the names and the web of Russia
ties have left you a bit confused, let's start by focusing on the guy on the
far right of that chart, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and ask yourself,
what might he stand to gain from that web of connections to Donald Trump?
To answer
that question, let's go back to what we believe to have been Putin’s goals as
stated in the still unsubstantiated dossier compiled by former M-I Six agent
Christopher Steele.
Goal number
one, the lifting of U.S. sanctions against Russia that were imposed over Russia’s
invasion of Crimea. One of names on that
chart, Trump business associate Felix Sater** is one of the primary architects
of a peace plan for Ukraine and Russia that could in theory have paved the way
for Trump to get those sanctions lifted.
The would be
peace plan was hand delivered to the office of ousted National Security Advisor
Michael Flynn by longtime Trump lawyer Michael Cohen but the plan leaked to the
New York Time last month and even Republicans have made it clear that they
would stand in the way of lifting sanctions against Russia.
Then there's
Putin’s long time mission to undermine the United States as a leader of western
democracy and what better way to do that than to undermine two of the agencies
that are best positioned to challenge Russia, namely the State Department and
the CIA. (background)
How close is
Russia to getting what it wants out of Trump world (background)
We non know
per Daily Caller “Flynn paid ex-FBI agents, Behavior analysts, in Lobbying work
for Turkish government.” (background on the now widely reported evidence that
Trump was working for the nation of Turkey at the same time)
What do you make
of this new debacle over Michael Flynn:
03:12
I am torn
between thinking, yes, this is in fact a vast Russian conspiracy to influence or
destabilize U.S. politics, on the one hand, and thinking that this is just the
usual story of corruption greed and incompetence. I mean it looks like Michael Flynn got out of
government, he left the defense intelligence agency, and he immediately started
trying to cash out and he was not very
scrupulous about who he’d take money from.
Yet another irony is apparently the company that was paying him to do
all this, the company with ties to the Turkish government and in turn ultimately
to Russia, apparently they want some of their money back because they don’t
think Flynn’s firm did such a great job.
So I don't know. I think I'm a
little bit coming down when it comes to Flynn on the side of greed and
incompetence, not conspiracy.
Joy: And he
keeps getting fired. Now apparently the
Turks want to fire him too. Now Malcolm,
talk about the other entity that seems to keep swirling around Trump World and
that is WikiLeaks. They've released a
cache of documents damaging U.S. intelligence- (background)
At what point
do we begin to say, listen, Julian Assange is not some defender of freedom and
transparency, he's an anti-U.S. anarchist, pro-Russia, whatever you want to
call it?
04:33
Malcolm
Nance: Well I think we start back on
July 23rd when both I and Paul Krugman, Krugman wrote an article in
the New York Times calling WikiLeaks out and on the same day I made media
statements calling them a Russian laundromat.
These- WikiLeaks is no defender of transparency. They are a wholly owned subsidiary of Russian
intelligence. And they have no problem
releasing things in timed releases that benefit only two entities, Donald Trump
and Vladimir Putin. There has never been a document released from Russian
intelligence or anybody that's opposed to Julian Assange.
But now forty
eight hours after Donald Trump makes an amazing stunning historic lie to the
American public, where he says that a former President of the United States
wiretapped him in the electoral campaign, which we all know is not true-
WikiLeaks comes out and releases this giant tranche of documents showing how
the CIA would have done it.
To tell you
the truth I took a look at those documents, none of that stuff is extremely
well known but a lot of that is still secret or it's marked secret, a lot of
that stuff has been discussed at defense conferences, hacker conferences, all
the times. We just now know that the
United States has the capability that we've always had.
But WikiLeaks
right now as far as I'm concerned it's a question of whether the Trump
administration will go after them for stealing eight thousand seven hundred
some U.S. intelligence documents. I
doubt it, don’t hold your breath.
Joy: That is the crux of it, Russia has what it
wants, it wants to undermine the EU, it would love to do to the CIA what was
done to the KGB in the fall of the Soviet Union. This isn’t about Donald Trump in the end,
this is about Russia. This is about a
global destabilization effort.
Joy: It seems
like only the Democrats are paying attention to this, (Adam Schiff clip: We
certainly want to get to the bottom of that dossier.)
08:20
Joy: What are
the chances of getting Christopher Steele to testify, Rosa?
Rosa Brooks: No idea but it's not impossible. He's a former British operative. (background) He does have some concept that this
is not just about campaigns, it's about geopolitics and the world. It could happen.
Joy: Malcolm, Is Donald Trump being investigated?
Should Congress
subpoena Roger Stone, subpoena Paul Manafort, subpoena Carter Page, start subpoenaing
some of these people who have all of these Russian connections around Donald
Trump?
09:52
Malcolm Nance:
Absolutely. And we're talking about the period of time from when the election campaign
started to the election ended here. And Roger
Stone says that he had contact with Guccifer 2.0. Guccifer 2.0 was not just this nebulous hacker
entity, he was an operative of Russian intelligence, Russian military intelligence,
G R U. In fact, he was probably a team
of operatives inside an information warfare management center, who were designed
to go out and put this out and to look like this nebulous hacker. And journalists and people like Roger Stone
were coordinating. What other coordination did he have.
Stone seemed
to have a lot of information ahead of time. He got it from WikiLeaks and everywhere
else. This needs to be- everyone needs
to be subpoenaed. This is the national security
of the United States that's at stake here, this is not partisan at all. And anyone that doesn't want to protect this nation,
we need to call them out on it.
